New protected areas announced for Nova Scotia
Following up on the the announcement of an unprecedented conservation investment this spring, the Nova Scotia government is increasing the size of the province\'s protected areas network. In addition to a new protected wilderness area (Shelburne River Wilderness Area), the government has announced expansions to four existing protected wilderness areas, and eleven new nature reserves. Several provincial park reserves will also be established.
The provincial government acquired $27 million worth of private lands from Bowater Mersey Paper Co. Ltd. in southwestern Nova Scotia this March, promising to use the lands for conservation purposes.
CPAWS-NS has been working to expand the protected areas system in Nova Scotia by working collaboratively with government and the forest industry.
