East Side Lake Winnipeg gets a boost towards World Heritage recognition
The Manitoba government and Pimachiowin Aki spokesperson Sophia Rabliauskas, on behalf of the First Nation-initiated World Heritage Site nomination, have announced $531,000 in new provincial funding to support World Heritage designation for the boreal forest east of Lake Winnipeg. The funding will help the region achieve the prestigious UNESCO designation and help east side communities develop their land use plans.
CPAWS commends participating First Nations and the Manitoba government for this effort to make the east side of Lake Winnipeg a model of environmental and cultural protection with sustainable tourism opportunities.
