Morrison wraps up 2006 canoe quest after 3,000 km

Winnipeg -- After canoeing over 3000 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean in a quest to paddle under his own power across Canada, CPAWS National Board Trustee Jay Morrison wrapped up his expedition for this year at Lake Winnipeg today.

Says Morrison, "After nearly four months of solo paddling, I've realized that it's truly about the journey, not racing to the destination, and I will continue the journey to the Arctic next year in this spirit.

"I'm extremely pleased about the opportunities I've had to speak with Canadians in person, via the website (www.cpaws.org), and through the media about Boreal wilderness conservation, and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS)."

"In many ways, the hardest parts of the route are behind me now - paddling upstream against amazing currents and across northern Lake Superior -- and for that I have to thank my sponsors and supporters, and everyone on the trip who gave me a place to stay, a bite to eat, or just an encouraging word. It helped a lot."

"Meeting people was much more important to me than I thought it would be, and I'm looking forward to meeting more Canadians next year, when I complete the journey to Inuvik."

Jay will be posting more details to his journal in the days to come about his decision to end the trip now, and other subjects his readers have asked about. He is also planning a series of presentations to be announced in the fall.
