Jack Layton visits Nahanni

The Honourable Jack Layton, Leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, is paddling the South Nahanni River this week with NWT MP, Dennis Bevington, and Toronto area MP, Olivia Chow. Prior to their visit to the Nahanni, CPAWS NWT Executive Director, Daryl Sexsmith, presented Mr. Layton and Ms. Chow with a mounted Nahanni poster to welcome them to the Territories.

In a telephone interview from Virginia Falls, Mr. Layton described the river as "spectacular" and expressed his support for the Dehcho Land Use Plan, which identifies the South Nahanni watershed as an area to be protected. He will also be visiting with First Nations community members during his trip.
