Nature's Danger Alert! When caribou meets politician.

I recently read Ontario's Woodland Caribou Conservation Plan. The plan acknowledges the negative impact that human development in my species' habitat has on our well being and that 40-50% of my Ontario boreal woodland caribou friends and family have disappeared.

The plan sets out the Provincial Government's intentions for woodland caribou conservation. They intend to do more studies and then take action. At this stage of the game, intentions are not enough. The Government needs to take action NOW to stop the decline of Ontario's woodland caribou. An immediate halt on the logging and road building that is pushing my Ontario cousins to extinction needs to be put in place while the Government undertakes further studies.

Please show your support for immediate action to save Ontario's woodland caribou by going to http://www.caribouandyou.ca/on and sending a letter to the Ontario Goverment.

My species thanks you :)

Facebook fan page CaribouAndYou officially launched!

Last week I asked my facebook friends to help soft launch CPAWS' CaribouAndYou fan page on facebook. We needed just 25 initial fans to be eligible to grab the custom url: www.facebook.com/CaribouAndYou.  The response was overwhelming. We had almost 100 people join! So now that we have officially launched the CaribouAndYou fan page, I wanted to send a quick video shout out to our fans and especially the founding fans who so quickly helped us get our custom facebook username. So, here it is. Oh, and if you haven’t yet jumped onboard, please do and become a CaribouAndYou fan – we’d love to have you :)

Free feature films for the connected world

The other night I watched the documentary HOME.…for FREE! It’s one of the many feature length movies available on YouTube's movie channel (one caveat, some of them are not available to Canadian viewers…Grrrrr)

HOME - a documentary by Yann Arthus-Bertrand

If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend you grab a friend, a bucket of popcorn, a couple of comfy chairs, set the YouTube player to HD full screen mode, and sit back and make it a movie night.

It’s the story of our planet. How it came to be and where it’s headed. The film contains all the traits of a great story - history, conflict, hope, connection to the audience, and leaves you with much to talk and think about after it’s over. It's beautifully shot and narrated by Glenn Close.

For me, the movie really hit home the fact that we are all connected and the reason why I guess I'm called an indicator species. If woodland caribou are in trouble then that’s an indication that Canada's boreal forest is in trouble, which means our planet's environment is at risk. So basically if I’m in danger, so are you – YIKES!

I give Home a full 5/5 stars. But hey, since it’s FREE on YouTube you can rate and review it for yourself. If you do, I would love to hear what you think of the film.
