Get Outside BC - Kelowna Community Project

Get Outside BC is a collaborative youth outdoor leadership program that strengthens youth attachment to BC’s wilderness. We empower youth aged 14-18 by teaching them hands-on skills in wilderness survival, leadership, and conservation in order to prepare them to lead projects that connect other youth to wild spaces. Rather than providing a one-time experience, Get Outside BC provides youth with tools and resources to develop an enduring connection to the outdoors and a lifelong identity as a natural leader.

Who: Youth aged 14-18 from Kelowna and the surrounding communities.

When: July 10th 2016 – October 21st 2017.

Where: Phase 1 will be at Conkle Lake Provincial Park. Phase 2-3 will be community based.

Cost: Free

What: The three phases of the Get Outside BC project are briefly as follows:

Phase I – Youth Outdoor Leadership Camp / July 10th – July 14th, 2017

For 5 days/4 nights 10 youth will come together for an outdoor getaway camp at Conkle Lake Provincial Park where they will participate in leadership and outdoor skill building workshops, try new outdoor activities, and learn how to plan outdoor adventure for when they return home.

Phase II – Youth-led Community Initiatives and Outdoor Adventures / July 14th – October 21st, 2017

Youth will attend bi-weekly group gatherings to continue building leadership skills and to continue getting outside. Within each month youth will attend a group meeting focused on skill building and a separate gathering to do an outdoor activity together (i.e.: canoe, hike, rock climbing, etc.).

Further, each participant will lead an outdoor event that inspires their peers to get outside. Youth have access to a $150 bursary to support their events and are encouraged to work with other community groups. A Get Outside BC coordinator will support the planning and delivery of the youth-led initiatives.

Phase III - Celebration / October 21st, 2017

Youth participants, alumni, mentors and GOBC staff will gather to celebrate the achievements, offer feedback on each other’s projects and for a final outdoor adventure together. This will be a one day gathering on October 21st.
