December 11 - Cafe Scientifique -  Canada’s commitment to protecting 17% of land by 2020.

Our Cafe Scientifique is an informal gathering of people to discuss current science, conservation and environmental issues that affect our communities. On the second Monday of each month, we will discuss a different topic related to biology, conservation, wilderness and our place in the environment.

This Monday, December 11, 2017, Nik Lopoukhine will be discussing the federal government's committment to protecting 17% of Canada's land by 2020. Nik has extensive experience working to protect Canada's wilderness and has recieved numerous national and international awards for his professional and volunteer work. Nik worked at Parks Canada for twenty four years, including as Director General of National Parks. On retiring in 2005, he continued his work protecting nature with IUCN, represented Canada at the Canadian Biodiversity Convention, is on CPAWS-OV's board and continues to advise and promote protected areas. Since 2012, he has served as advisor to the Auditor General of Quebec, as advisor to the Auditor General of Canada and advisor to the Canadian Senate.

As a member of the National Advisory Panel, Nik works to create recommendations to achieve Canada's goal to protect 17% of land by 2020 through a coordinated and connected network of protected and conservation areas throught the country that could serve as the cornerstone for biodiversity conservation for generations to come.
