CPAWS and the Joint Review Panel

Jen & Erica 2 JRP Meeings May 06.JPGAs an intervener in the Joint Review Panel (JRP) process, we spoke during hearings that ran from May 2005 to November 2007. We told the JRP that protected areas must be established and land use plans completed in advance of further industrial development. Our interventions were developed in coordination with our  partners to ensure we presented the strongest case possible for protection in advance of development.

The JRP hearings were designed to evaluate the impacts of the proposed project on the people and environment of the NWT.  The Joint Review Panel’s findings will be released late summer 2008.

CPAWS-NWT’s Summary Recommendations to the Joint Review Panel:

  • Support a balance between conservation and development in the Mackenzie Valley;
  • Recommend establishing a network of protected areas that will permanently protect the ecological and cultural values of the Mackenzie Valley;
  • Recommend the completion and implementation of land use plans that identify areas for development and areas for conservation; and
  • Recommend the implementation of an NWT cumulative effects management framework.
