The place:
The vast Mackenzie River Valley covers a large area of intact northern boreal forest stretching across Canada's Northwest Territories. The Mackenzie is the longest river in Canada, and one of the world's last great free-running river systems. The Mackenzie Valley is a major migratory corridor for waterfowl, and is rich in wildlife, including species at risk such as boreal woodland caribou.
The region is also home to Aboriginal communities, for whom it is a vital hunting, trapping and fishing ground that supports their traditional lifestyles.

The rapid pace of development in the Mackenzie valley means opportunities to protect important ecological and cultural areas could be lost.
