Protecting Boreal Ecosystems and Sahtugot’ine Culture on Great Bear Lake

The men, women, elders and children of Deline celebrated a major step towards protecting important natural and cultural lands in February 2007.  Federal Environment Minister John Baird came to Yellowknife to announce federal funding for of Sahoyúé - ?ehdacho as a fully protected National Historic Site.  The community of Déline is currently in negotiations with Parks Canada to develop an agreement on the establishment and management of the National Historic Site.CPAWS-NWT has worked with the community of Déline and other partners to protect Sahoyúé - ?ehdacho ("saw-you eh-dah-cho") for over a decade.  We have done much of this work through the multi-stakeholder NWT Protected Areas Strategy process.

Sahoyúé - ?ehdacho is made up of two culturally and ecologically important peninsulas on the west side of Great Bear Lake, NWT.  In English, Sahoyúé translates from North Slavey as Grizzly Bear Mountain, and ?ehdacho as Scented Grass Hills.
