Sahtú (Great Bear Lake), the ninth largest freshwater lake in the world, is a lake of many superlatives. It is the largest lake within the borders of Canada. Located on the Arctic Circle (66 °N), Sahtú is largest lake in the world at such a northerly latitude. The land, water and resources in the watershed are for the most part clean and healthy. The last two world record trout were caught in Great Bear Lake. Three terrestrial ecozones surround Sahtú (Taiga Plains, Taiga Shield and Southern Arctic), providing the transition from taiga to tundra. Déline is the only community on the lake, and Gameti is the only other community within the Great Bear Lake watershed.
