The Northwest Territories Chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS-NWT) is part of a national non-profit conservation organization dedicated to protecting Canada's wilderness.

We envision a territory with a network of protected areas that will conserve our natural and cultural values for current and future generations.  We envision a territory where land management policies give high priority to the protection of natural and cultural values, and allow for carefully planned areas of well-managed and sustainable resource development.

Our mission is to conserve the land, water and wildlife of the NWT for current and future generations, by working together with NWT residents, governments, communities and organizations.

CPAWS-NWT's three main conservation goals are:

  1.  NWT communities will be active and successful participants in the NWT Protected Areas Strategy and Mackenzie Valley Action Plan, working to permanently protect special areas of land for the long term;
  2. NWT communities will be engaged in protecting special areas of land for the long term through other conservation initiatives, and
  3. Land management processes in the NWT will ensure the protection of natural and cultural values.

We are based in Yellowknife and were formed by a group of volunteers in 1996.
