CPAWS welcomes step forward towards new NWT national park

April 7, 2010

The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS), congratulates the Akaitcho Dene community of Łutsel K’e and Parks Canada for signing a Framework Agreement for negotiation of the proposed Thaidene Nene - East Arm National Park Reserve.

The signing ceremony held with Environment Minister Jim Prentice on April 7th in Calgary is an important step towards Park establishment.

Thaidene Nene, translated from Chipewayn as "The land of the ancestors", is located in the East Arm region of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. This area, covering approximately 33,000 km2, is one of the largest areas of intact boreal wilderness in North America. Establishment of this national park reserve would protect cultural, spiritual and environmental values which include a range of ecosystems from boreal forest to taiga shield that are home to numerous migratory birds and animals.
