Northerners want action on conservation: CPAWS-NWT federal candidate questionnaire
October 6, 2008Conservation issues are of great concern to Northerners and all Canadians. In the lead-up to the October 14, 2008 federal election, CPAWS-NWT distributed a questionnaire to each Western Arctic candidate, asking them to commit to environmental actions during their coming term in office.
We posed the following questions to each federal candidate:
If elected, will you commit to these environmental actions during your coming/next term in office:
1. Will you work with Aboriginal organizations and the territorial government to establish and permanently protect key conservation areas in the NWT in advance of major development (e.g. the proposed Mackenzie Gas Project) in the Mackenzie Valley?
2. Will you oppose industrial development, such as mining and oil and gas, in protected areas?
3. Will you support completion of land use planning in advance of major development projects in the Mackenzie Valley and other areas that may be development if the Mackenzie Gas Project and other major industrial projects are constructed?
4. Will you support the development and implementation of an NWT Water Strategy that includes protecting our water and key watersheds for future generations and helping to broker a legally-enforceable transboundary agreement with Alberta?
5a. Will you take concrete action to combat climate change in the NWT?
5b. What is your top priority action to combat climate change in the NWT?
